We all have that cupboard. Or multiple. The one you open and instantly regret because things are stacked, tangled, or just falling out. Maybe it’s the bathroom shelf full of half-used products you forgot you owned. Maybe it’s the kitchen cupboard hiding that blender you used one time in 2019.
If your home is starting to feel a bit full and you’d love a bit more breathing space, learning how to declutter my cupboards is a really good place to start. For lots of people, it can feel hard to let go of things. That’s normal.
Declutter My Cupboards
1. Bathroom Cupboards
Bathroom cupboards fill up fast, mostly because we keep things “just in case.” The expired sunscreen. The face mask from your self-care boost of 2022. The shampoo that never quite worked but somehow still lives there.
How to declutter your bathroom cupboard:
- Take everything out first. It helps you see what’s actually there (and lets you wipe the shelves while you’re at it).
- Check expiry dates – most products expire 6–12 months after opening.
- Keep only what you actually use weekly.
- Anything unopened and still in date? Donate it to your local charity shop.
2. Kitchen Cupboards
This is where the random gadgets hide. The toastie maker. The air fryer insert you’ve never used. The five open packets of pasta because you forgot you already had some.
To declutter your kitchen cupboards:
- Do one cupboard at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed.
- Clear out expired food and old spices (yes, spices expire.)
- Ask yourself:Have I used this in the last year? If the answer is no, it’s taking up valuable space.
- Consider having one “everyday cupboard” where your most-used items live. It makes cooking feel smoother instantly.
3. Wardrobe & Bedroom Cupboards
This one can feel emotional but has the biggest payoff.
Ask yourself:
- Does it fit?
- Do I actually wear it?
- Does it make me feel good?
If not, it’s just taking up room.
You can:
- Donate clothes in good condition
- Sell on Vinted/Depop to make some extra money
- Recycle worn-out textiles responsibly
That dress from 2017 that you wore once? Someone else could love that dress.
4. The Cupboard Under the Stairs (AKA The “Random Cupboard”)
This is often home to:
- Old coats
- Shoes no one remembers buying
- Tools that disappeared months ago
- Empty appliance boxes “in case you needed to return it”… three years ago
Once you clear this cupboard, it can suddenly become useful storage rather than chaos storage. Imagine opening it without emotional preparation.
A Small Tip to Make This Easier
Put on music or a podcast and set a 20-minute timer. Work until the timer rings. Then stop. You’ll be shocked what you can get done in tiny bursts.
Learning how to declutter my cupboards isn’t really about cleaning. It’s about making room to live. Less rummaging. Less stress.
You’ll feel the difference.
