Let’s be honest, we all love using an air fryer, it’s become a kitchen staple.
But when it comes time to clean an air fryer, it can seem like quite a faff (& often we get lazy with it.) The good news is it doesn’t have to be a hassle. Here’s how to clean an air fryer properly, without damaging it or making it harder than it needs to be.
1 – Safety First (Always)
Before you clean an air fryer, make sure it’s:
- Switched off
- Unplugged
- Completely cooled
It sounds obvious, but it’s essential. Never attempt to clean an air fryer while it’s still warm, and never immerse the main appliance in water.
2 – Remove and Soak the Basket & Tray
The basket and tray usually collect the most grease.
To properly clean an air fryer basket:
- Remove all detachable parts
- Soak them in hot, soapy water for 30–60 minutes
- Use a non-abrasive sponge to scrub
Avoid harsh scrubbers – they can damage the non-stick coating. Sometimes the grease can be very stubborn though:
- Mix baking soda and water into a thick paste
- Apply it to greasy areas
- Leave it for 10–15 minutes
- Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush
Another trick? Place half a dishwasher tablet in the basket, fill with boiling water, and let it soak. It can really help lift the grease.
3 – Don’t Forget the Heating Element
When you clean an air fryer, the heating element is often overlooked, but grease can build up there too. Carefully turn the appliance upside down (once unplugged and cooled) and:
- Use a damp cloth or soft-bristled toothbrush
- Gently wipe away any grease
- Avoid getting water into electrical parts
This step helps prevent smoke and unpleasant smells during cooking.
4 – Try This Deep Clean Hack
If your air fryer needs a deeper refresh:
- Fill the basket with hot water and a small amount of washing-up liquid
- Place it back in the air fryer
- Run it at 200°C for around 3–4 minutes
The steam helps loosen grease, making it easier to wipe away afterwards. Just remember to dry everything thoroughly before reassembling.
5 – How to Make Cleaning Easier Next Time
Once you’ve taken the time to properly clean an air fryer, you’ll want to keep it that way.
A few preventative tips:
- Clean it after every use (once cooled)
- Use silicone liners or parchment paper
- Never leave residue to build up over multiple uses
Regular maintenance makes it much less of a chore.
Don’t Let Small Jobs Build Up
The reason cleaning an air fryer feels like such a faff is usually because grease has been allowed to build up. A quick wipe after each use takes minutes, but leaving it for weeks makes it a proper job.
